FREEWAVE ROUND ONE - 10.30am today - Evans Bay

Freewave round 1 is on at Evans Bay (i.e. Shark Bay, the Miramar side) Registrations from 10.30am. Briefing at 11am then all go! Looks to be a great day for freeracing and freestyle action. Come down and compete or check it out!

The freewave is to encourage all windsurfers to push their skills on the water and have fun in a competitive environment.

The series is to be 3 rounds conditions permitting. Reserve days for each round are to be the following Sunday. The proposed locations for the event rounds are to be Plimmerton, Lyall Bay or Evans Bay depending on conditions. Check this page and deepfried.tv on the day for update.

NEW: Freeracing

The freewave is to include wave sailing, freestyle  and freeracing. The freeracing aspect is to bring something new to the freewave this year (please bear with us as we see how this goes).

The goal is to have at least one wave and one freestyle focused round in the series conditions permitting. We will attempt to run a freerace at the start of each round. The freeraces will likely start from the beach or by bouy rounding aligned with a flag on the shore. Racing will be to an outer mark and back to either a beach finish or bouy rounding also aligned with a flag on the shore. Only wave or freestyle gear is allowed. Placing in the freeraces over all the three rounds will be combined to give an overall freerace ranking over the series. This will be considered in the final placing alongside the placings from the wave and freestyle sections.

Freewave Judging

  • For the wave rounds 3 jumps/moves and 3 wave rides will be judged for each windsurfer. For the freestyle rounds the best 4 moves/jumps will be judged.
  • Each move will be only counted once. If the same move is performed more than once the highest scoring one will count. The same move on different tacks counts as a different move.
  • Only a completed moves/jumps and wave rides (sailed away from) will be judged
  • Moves/jumps and wave rides will be judged on difficulty, quality/style and variety
  • Jumps, moves and wave rides will be rated on quality/style. This will be based on a 5 point qualitative scale:

      Move--(Dreadful but just made it)
      Move-(Not Clean but made it)
      Move(Clean but standard)
      Move+(Clean, sweet move)
      Move++(Clean, Epic/Huge/Wow factor)

  • The difficult and variety of the jumps/moves and wave rides relative to each other will be considered when deciding rankings of each windsurfer
  • Moves or jumps during the wave ride that are able to be connected into one flowing ride count towards the wave ride. Those that are disconnected are considered separate from the wave ride as a jump/move
  • The format will be decided on the day depending on conditions and number of windsurfers
  • Safety on the water comes first
  • Judges decision is final
