Pauatahanui Inlet

This is a great place and the most popular, for learning to windsurf. Its also good for improving or racing. Heaps of parking, grass rigging, toilets and BBQ area. Usually less windy than nearby Plimmerton beach in northerly directions, but also gustier, since the inlet is surrounded by hills.

From October to April, the Wellington Windsurf School (Facebook Page) windsurfing school is usually happening at the weekends.

Who does it suit

Ideal for beginners as the water is below head-high for quite a distance and it is really safe. The water is pretty flat so its good for getting speed up. Improvers also often come here to work on their gybes, waterstarts, or freestyle tricks.

What are the best conditions

Works in most wind directions from N, NW SE and E. High tide is better because you dont need to walk so far & are less likely to damage your fin coming too close to shore.

How do I get there

20 minutes north of Wellington, coming from State highway 1, take a right at the 2nd lights in Plimmerton about 100 meters after wavespot, into Grays Road, then follow this road until you reach Motukaraka point on your right.

Coming from the Hutt Valley heading north on State highway 2, turn left at the Haywards turn off at the sign to Pauatahanui and Porirua. Follow this road until you come to a roundabout, turn right to Pauatahanui and then left into Grays Road. Follow this road until you reach Motukaraka point on your left.

What should I look out for

Watch out for rocks and shells on bottom, booties do help! Also watch out for the sandbar in the middle of the inlet, which I have been told will take out even a slalom fin at low tide. Although the inlet is surrounded by houses on the hills, and someone will usually be keeping an eye out, beginners shouldn't be tempted to sail here alone.
