If there is a decent
northerly in town, and no one is in the Ditch, there might be some sailing going on around in Seatoun. Its a bump and jump, slalom and freestyle area with no real waves at any of the beaches.
A bit further north from Seatoun beach along the coast road are Worser Bay (launch near the Worser Bay Yacht Club) and Scorching Bay.
What are the best conditions?
Northerly winds are pretty good here, and its better than Evans Bay in a NE, as the wind is more consistent. North westerly is no good as the wind is obstructed by the Miramar peninsular. Worser Bay, and Scorching Bay, are the best spots in the wellington region in a SE!
Who does it suit
Stronger northerlies produce good chop for a bit of airtime, but
generally the spot is preferred by freeride, slalom and freestyle sailors. Learners have used Worser Bay since its quite sheltered - good for uphauling & has a gentle gradient beach down into the water which is useful for beach starting practice. The further you sail from the beach, the stronger the northerly wind becomes. Learners blown downwind will generally end up on Seatoun beach.
How do I get there
Drive through the tunnel into Seatoun, then head down to the shore
where you will find heaps of parking, grass rigging area and toilets. Turn left to follow the coast road around towards Worser Bay and Scorching Bay.
What should I look out for
Watch out for the ferries when heading out far enough, they are fast !! Learners should not sail beyond the end of Seatoun Beach into the Harbour channel.
